The format that always opens

JPEG has been the shared language of photographs for decades, so every device, photo service and print shop can read it. It is also lossy, which means it re-encodes the image and can use a much smaller file than PNG without looking any different at normal viewing sizes.

What to keep in mind

Adjust the quality to suit the job

The default quality suits most photographs. Lower it for a smaller file you are sending by email, or raise it when detail matters, such as a product photo bound for a marketplace.

Transparency is not kept

JPG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are lost. If the image relies on transparency, convert to PNG instead.

Original dimensions are kept

Choosing JPG sets the longest side to Original, so you get the same picture at the same size in a format that opens anywhere.

Why convert WebP to JPG?

JPG is the most widely accepted image format. Use it when an app, marketplace, printer or older system will not take WebP and you need a file that opens everywhere.

What happens to transparent areas?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are not kept. If you need them, convert to PNG. For photographs, which are usually opaque, JPG is the smaller choice.

How do I control the JPG file size?

Use the image quality control. Lower quality means a smaller file with slightly less detail; higher quality keeps more detail at a larger size. The default is a good starting point.

Will converting WebP to JPG reduce quality?

JPG is lossy, so it re-encodes the image and discards a little detail, more so at lower quality settings. The result cannot be sharper than the WebP it came from.
