CONVERT PNG TO WEBP

Why PNG screenshots and graphics benefit most

PNG compresses without loss, so it preserves sharp edges and flat colour perfectly, but it spends a lot of bytes describing detail the eye cannot see. WebP supports transparency and can store flat areas far more efficiently. For interface screenshots and graphics with limited colours, the saving is often large with no visible change.

What to keep in mind

Transparency is preserved

WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparent backgrounds survive the conversion. You do not need to flatten your image or add a background colour first.

Text and fine detail

PNG usually wins for small text and one-pixel lines, because lossy compression softens hard edges. If your image is mostly text, raise the quality slider and compare the result before using it everywhere.

When PNG is still the better choice

Keep the original PNG for print, for further editing, and for any image where every pixel must be exact. Convert a copy for the web rather than overwriting your master file.

Questions about this conversion

Will I lose the transparent background in my PNG?

No. WebP supports transparency, and Whistle keeps the alpha channel during conversion. A transparent PNG becomes a transparent WebP.

Is WebP always smaller than PNG?

Usually, but not always. Photographs and detailed graphics shrink the most. A very small icon with few colours can occasionally come out larger, so compare the result when the file really matters.

Should I use lossy or lossless WebP?

Whistle produces lossy WebP, which suits photographs and most web graphics. Use a high quality setting for screenshots with text. If you need mathematically exact pixels, keep the PNG.

Can I convert a whole folder of PNGs?

Yes. Choose a folder or drop a ZIP, then convert the batch in one go. Your converted files download together as a single ZIP.
