Check who needs to see the image

Does AVIF support transparency?

Yes. AVIF supports an alpha channel, so a transparent PNG converts to a transparent AVIF without you flattening the image first.

Is AVIF smaller than WebP?

Often, yes, sometimes substantially so. On detailed images AVIF frequently wins, which is why it is worth trying when file size is the priority. The difference is usually smaller on simple graphics.

Why is AVIF conversion slower?

AVIF does far more work to find the smallest possible encoding. That is exactly what makes the files small, so the extra seconds are expected. Raising the encoding speed setting trades some compression for faster results.

Will every browser show my AVIF image?

Current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge all display AVIF. Older browsers and some desktop applications cannot. If your audience may be using old software, WebP is the more forgiving choice.
