Why photos shrink when you move to WebP

WebP uses a more modern compression scheme than JPEG, so it reaches the same perceived quality using fewer bytes. On photographic content the difference is often in the region of a quarter to a third smaller. On a page with several large photographs, that adds up quickly and helps the page load sooner.

What to keep in mind

Choose a quality setting you can trust

Start at the default and compare the converted image with the original at full size. Photographs usually hold up well in the 75 to 85 per cent range; lower than that, smooth areas such as skies and skin can start to look patchy.

Mind the file extension

The converted file is named .webp. If you are uploading to a platform that only accepts .jpg or .png, check that it supports WebP first or keep your JPEG.

Keep the original JPEG

Conversion is one-way. Save the converted copy alongside your original so you still have an editable master if you need one later.

Is converting JPEG to WebP worth it?

For photographs served on a website, often yes. You keep comparable visual quality at a smaller size, which helps pages load faster. If the image is going somewhere that does not accept WebP, there is no benefit.

Does converting add transparency to my photo?

No. WebP can store transparency, but a JPEG has none to begin with. Your converted photo will have the same solid background as the original.

How much smaller will my photos get?

It varies with the image and your quality setting. Heavily detailed photos tend to save more than already-compressed or very small ones. Whistle shows the size of each image before and after so you can judge for yourself.

Will converting degrade my photo?

Every lossy re-encode discards some information, so avoid converting the same file repeatedly. Convert once from the original JPEG and keep that as your master.
